Who does not want to work in such a kitchen? The benefits of clean and organised kitchen is not only confined to biological and economical section but also to unconscious psychological mind. In fact such a kitchen usually tempt you to work even more in there which reduces your dependence on high calorie food from the market and promote health with fresh home-cooked food. Especially, in India, where food is more often than not cooked at home, dealing with kitchen and its maintenance has all the more importance. So, here we are with ten most efficient, proven and innovative ways to help you keep your kitchen clean and well organised.

TIP 1 – GET RID OF EVERYTHING YOU DO NOT NEED / USE REGULARLY

This method in formal terms is termed as DE cluttering. Presence of more irrelevant articles makes the kitchen look much messy and complex. Those ice cream makers, knife sets, idli maker, fancy dinner sets which are only used in case a guest arrives , juice sets, etc., all these things make the kitchen look more bulky and makes a psychological barrier in the mind that organising the place would be a tiring job. Well, it will not be same once you get rid of these stuffs. The point is that, the lesser you have, the better you will manage your stuffs. Place all those items in boxes by segmenting them in a proper way.

For example, pack all dinner sets in one box and mark them as such, so that, you don’t need to go on a searching spree at the time you need it. Similarly do it for the juice sets, the cutlery items, keep only those knives which you use regularly, and pack all others up, all those baking bowels, idli maker, just pack them up, mark them with their identification and place the boxes in some cupboard from where it is not visible.

TIP 2 – USE TRANSPARENT CONTAINERS / MARK YOUR CONTAINERS WITH ITS CONTENTS

One of the major issues while working in a kitchen is finding ingredients and often getting confused. It might be easy for those who work regularly in kitchens that contain different containers by remembering (as usually done in Indian households i.e., recycling containers of chayamprash, glucon-d, etc.), but once some other content is stored in a container supposed to possess something else or some new cook enters the kitchen, a confusion arises and then the searching spree that follows might kill your entire interest in cooking. And when your place contains same set designer containers, situations might be miserable unless and until they are transparent.

The best solution for the above problem is to make sure whenever you buy containers they are transparent. Another solution is that put a sticker on each of them marking their contents and make sure that contents are never misplaced. This tip is particularly helpful for saving your time as well.

TIP 3 – TRAIN YOUR HOUSE MATES / FAMILY MEMBERS KITCHEN ADDICATES

Kitchens can get completely gross and out of control if left unattended even for a day. And somehow one dirty bowl on the counter or sink can look very ugly. Inspired by this, our third tips suggests you to train your family members / house mates to follow some rules. The kitchen can never be as desired without prior cooperation of the family members. Make them acquainted with your kitchen policies like, where to unload the dish-washers (especially train the kids to do such works), allocated places for different things, your cleaning schedule, etc.

And above all, make sure that the sink is never filled with dirty plates, spoons, etc. To do it make sure that all the essentials like cleaning items are clearly visible and within comfortable reach.

TIP 4 -KEEP A TRASH BIN WITHIN VICINITY OF YOUR WORK

Always make sure to keep one or more trash bin in different corners of kitchen. This might seem to be quite a petty tip but it does make a difference. Instead of throwing the wastes or peels in some bowl or sink or always running to find a dustbin in some other room, putting it in the bin placed within the vicinity of your hands will prove to be a less tiring option. Presence of a trash bin even tempts you and your family members psychologically to get rid of useless items as well.

TIP 5 – MAKE SCHEDULE FOR REGULATED CLEANING ON A FIXED SCHEDULE

Cleanliness and hygiene is of prime importance for a home. But it is even more important to maintain in kitchen as it is the powerhouse of the home. An untidy kitchen kill all the interest in cooking and moreover it is potential disease generator. It sometimes prove to be quite fatal. Cleaning the kitchen should be on the top priority of regular schedule for everyone. To carry on this task, allocate the regular intervals. For example, You should do simple dishwashing, cleaning sink and sweeping daily, while you should do an extensive cleaning of the whole kitchen once every month. Supplementing that, you should maintain a schedule to clean the refrigerator every week or fortnight must. Follow these schedules strictly.

TIP 6 – RE-EVALUATE YOUR DAILY STORAGE STRATEGIES

Remember putting fruits and vegetables on counters / tables which you must store in refrigerator so that they last longer. Evaluate your freezers daily, to watch out for things which are aging, color code your kitchen in segments , like putting spies in separate colored containers, dry fruits in other sets, place your cookbooks in some cupboard instead of keeping it here and there. Keep a single place for sticky notes (may be refrigerator front) and make sure you have a list of all those items which needs to be bought / thrown / done on those notes. A vertical hanging storage for regular cooking utensils makes reach very easy to them.

TIP 7 – EFFECTIVE CLEANING SHOULD BE THE DEAL

Unless and until cleanliness is fool proof there is no point in cleaning at all. Few things in kitchen are hard to clean. Incorporate simple but scientific ideas for them. For example, use vinegar for cleaning Tupperware and make sure to let the water dry in sunlight, use rice for cleaning coffee and spice grinder. Avoid cleaning wooden surfaces with water and clean them with lemons and vinegar. Wipe the dishes and glasses with towels before unloading them from dishwasher. Tackle the overflow of cleaning supplies and store the leftover stuffs for future usage.

TIP 8 – INCORPORATE DRAWERS IN YOUR KITCHEN DESIGN

Use drawers as much as possible. Having drawers not only provides you more space for storage, but also it keeps the look of kitchen minimalist. Make sure you have drawer everywhere, below the sink , beside the washing machine, below the cupboard etc. And use different drawers for different tools. For example, place all measuring tools in a separate drawer, stored cleaning soaps in another, snacks in separate one, etc.

TIP 9 – DIVIDE THE KITCHEN ACCORDING TO USE

Divide the kitchen into several smaller areas depending upon usage. There should be a place for storage (pantry, freezer, etc., must be near cooking section), cutting (wooden board, knives for cutting, peeling, etc., it must also be near cooking area), cooking (the gas stove, microwave oven, baker, etc.), serving (plates, dishes, etc., it must be near cleaning facility), cleaning (sink, towels, etc.). And place the articles according to it. You can customize the frequency for cleaning different sections based on the work done at that section. This division provides a clear map of the kitchen and one won’t have to go on searching stuffs here and there.

TIP 10 – USE SMALL BASKETS

Baskets have one positive and very demanding quality, they are mobile and light. Using small baskets can be even more beneficial. Their role arises when there are no segmented store for some items, when one has to move items from storage to counter, for putting towel in it and variety of such purposes. Presence of small baskets provides flexibility in storage and it possesses potential increase in storage space.
