An Interview With Lathiya Shanmugasundaram – A Food Blogger at Lathi’s Kitchen
Just tell me a little bit of what food blogging means to you.
Ans: Food blogging, now is my way to connect people with like minds around the world. It means a great stress buster for me.
What inspired you to start the blog?
Ans: I started Food blogging to keep a note of recipes I know, so my kids can use it later when needed. My daughter was also interested in my blogging and helped in deciding the name of the blog.
When did you realize this was going to become more than just a hobby?
Ans: Once I started blogging and started interacting with the fellow bloggers. I knew that I’m learning every day something new and decided to make blogging to the next level. Then I decided to self-host.
Why do you think food blogging has become so popular now?
Ans: The reach of technology is so vast now. And also I believe people are more into home cooked food than restaurants considering the health. So they rely on food blogs to try different cuisines at home.
What is the most time-consuming part for you as a food blogger?
Ans: For me more than making a dish, time-consuming part is writing it down in the blog.
Could you give some advice for bloggers who are starting out?
Ans: Not quite an advice but I would say, believe in what you are doing. Make sure about your niche and concentrate on it.
What is the most important thing you should be doing as a food blogger?
Ans: Be sure about the ingredients and the quantity you use. I think you have to be true to your readers. If they ask something you are not sure of, do admit or respond after researching.
How much technical know how do you think someone needs to have if they want to become a food blogger?
Ans: I had just a basic knowledge of computer when I started blogging. But eventually learned. So not necessarily you have to be technical savvy to be a food blogger. There are always people out there to help.
What according to you is the best way to increase traffic to your food blog?
Ans: Communicate with your readers. That is the main thing. People like when you communicate honestly with them and do visit and comment on others blogs too. Then comes the social media. Not all the social media gives the similar amount of traffic but keep trying.
How often did you post when you started off as opposed to now?
Ans: I used to post every day when I started but now I post once a week.
How soon were you able to make your first 100 dollars?
Ans: I self-hosted one year before and started monetizing somewhere at that time. Still not yet reached 100$. Hope to soon.
What is your preferred source of monetization for your blog?
Ans: I say Ads.
Do you think there is a right time to start monetizing a food blog?
Ans: I know some of them started monetizing right from the start of blogging through affiliate links.
Which is your favorite social network, if any?
Ans: I love Facebook and Instagram as we can interact with people directly.
Name your favorite ingredient you think people should be using more in their cooking at home.
Ans: I would say Turmeric and cumin. They have lots of medicinal values we are forgetting slowly.
Would you like to share your favorite recipe on your blog?
Ans: Gulab Jamun is our family’s Favorite. That is also supposed to be the most popular recipe from my blog.
