An Interview With Harjeet – A Blogger at Word Smith Kaur
Just tell me a little bit of what food blogging means to you.
Ans: Food is passion, food is life, food is love to be shared with my loved ones and food blogging is how I share my kitchen secrets with everyone.
What inspired you to start the blog?
Ans: Sharing is something that comes naturally to me and my recipes are age-old traditional ones which I have simplified and made easy so that the new age woman finds it easy to cook without compromising on flavour and taste
When did you realize this was going to become more than just a hobby?
Ans: An year ago I had a few responses from my followers which was a revelation to me. Then I realised that I should monetize my blog and make some money through it. Also, I had to give up working full time as I had 2 spine surgeries. Being a content writer I can spin food stories easily and people are liking them.
Why do you think food blogging has become so popular now?
Ans: The Joint family system has become obsolete now and recipes were tried and tested in the family before but due to nuclear families and kids spreading their wings and flying out of their homes they have to fend for themselves. The information technology is so advanced now and the internet is within the reach of everyone. The youth find it very liberating to access recipes from the internet rather than ask or struggle with a new dish they would like to cook. So they head to food blogs and vlogs.
What is the most time-consuming part for you as a food blogger?
Ans: Nothing actually. I love doing what I do and the only thing I miss is making food videos compared to just text and pictures. I am a late bloomer and hence technologically challenged but I do try to do my best. I take time pondering over the layout, with the images and I think I should learn some more.
Could you give some advice for bloggers who are starting out?
Ans: Cooking is not a task or job, Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all. New bloggers have all the information at their fingertips and if they are tech savvy then they just have to be consistent, true to their passion and have a finger on the pulse.
What is the most important thing you should be doing as a food blogger?
Ans: Dishing out authentic and popular recipes which are simple to follow and to cook.
How much technical know how do you think someone needs to have if they want to become a food blogger?
Ans: I had none whatsoever, but I didn’t give up. If I could do it at 50 then it is a cake walk for the youngsters who have grown up with technology.
What according to you is the best way to increase traffic to your food blog?
Ans: Social media of course but basically start with friends and family. But I do not have any such support so I rely on social media only.
How often did you post when you started off as opposed to now?
Ans: I have been consistently posting twice a week.
How soon were you able to make your first 100 dollars?
Ans: I am still to see those dollars $$.
What is your preferred source of monetization for your blog?
Ans: I would like to focus on ads and brand sponsors mainly but I am clueless about it. I am old you know!!
Do you think there is a right time to start monetizing a food blog?
Ans: I tried affiliate marketing but I just gave up as I couldn’t follow the guidelines.
Which is your favorite social network, if any?
Ans: Instagram I would say.
Any last thoughts?
Ans: There are thoughts and more thoughts such as; I wish, I could, I would, I can, I will.
I wish I was more tech savvy or had some help but no regrets. Blogging gives me immense satisfaction and happiness for a lonely soul like me. They say a person needs few things to be truly happy in this world: someone to love, something to do, and something to hope for. Blogging is my something to do.
I was blogging on WordPress till recently https://anecdotesofmylife.wordpress.com/
I am a freelance content writer and I just moved to my website a few days ago; https://wordsmithkaur.com/
I would like to know; Is any website or company that helps technically challenged bloggers like me to monetize it?
